Dynamical Theory of the Pearling Instability in Cylindrical Vesicles.

چکیده
We give a simple theory for recent experiments of Bar-Ziv and Moses [Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 1392 (1994)] in which tubular vesicles are excited using laser tweezers to a "peristaltic" state. Considering the hydrodynamics of a bilayer membrane under tension, we reproduce some of the qualitative behavior seen and find a value for the wavelength of the instability in terms of independently measured material parameters, in rough agreement with the experimental values. Front Progagation in the Pearling Instability of Tubular Vesicles
Recently Bar-Ziv and Moses discovered a dynamical shape transformation induced in cylindrical lipid bilayer vesicles by the action of laser tweezers. We develop a hydrodynamic theory of fluid bilayers in interaction with the surrounding water and argue that the effect of the laser is to induce a sudden tension in the membrane. We refine our previous analysis to account for the fact that the sha...
متن کاملModel for curvature-driven pearling instability in membranes.
A phase-field model for dealing with dynamic instabilities in membranes is presented. We use it to study curvature-driven pearling instability in vesicles induced by the anchorage of amphiphilic polymers on the membrane. Within this model, we obtain the morphological changes reported in recent experiments. The formation of a homogeneous pearled structure is achieved by consequent pearling of an...

A phase-field model for dealing with the elastic bending energies is studied in the context of dynamic instabilities in membranes. We use it to study curvature-driven pearling instability in vesicles induced by the anchorage of amphophilic polymers on the membrane. Within this model, we obtain the morphological changes reported in the experimental literature. The formation of a homogeneous pear...

متن کاملPearling of lipid vesicles induced by nanoparticles.
We show that cationic nanoparticles encapsulated within vesicles of phosphocholine lipid can induce pearling. The dynamic process occurs as two stages: formation of tubular protrusions followed by pearling instability. The breakup into individual vesicles can be controlled by nanoparticle concentration.
